Teacher guide reSolve: Spatial Reasoning - Right Angles

TLF ID M025311

In this sequence of two lessons, students create and identify right angles. In the first lesson, students use popsicle sticks to create right angles and investigate how many right angles can be created for a given number of sticks. Students then go on to create eight sided polygons with different combinations of internal right angles. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is of value for the year 4 mathematics content description about comparing angles and classifying them as equal to, greater than or less than a right angle. Students use popsicle sticks to create and identify right angles. They also create irregular eight sided polygons and identify internal and external right angles in their created shapes.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in estimating, measuring and comparing the size of angles in every day objects.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
